Chapter Ten

“How does this not go to your head?” Felix’s sister Sofia asked him as she shook her head with a roll of her eyes. Sofia had watched him try to disentangle himself from the slinky blonde with a few pointed shakes of her head. His sister wore an emerald-green dress—one of her own designs—that complemented her long auburn hair, the late-afternoon sun glinting off her bare shoulders.

Felix and Sofia stood on the patio where the tall blonde had led him—on a ruse—to find a stray little dog she’d supposedly seen limping in the bushes separating the start of the property from the parking lot. Oh, the poor thing must have run off, the woman had said when they’d gotten on the patio and Felix had spent a good ten minutes looking for him, crouching down to peer under cars. No sign of a dog. I’m Eleanor, the blonde had practically purred.

Felix had shaken her hand and informed her he was going to go through the lot row by row to try to find the dog. It would involve a lot of crouching and might get her dress dirty. That was when the woman confessed it was all a flirty ruse to get him out here where they could chat. Would he ever forgive her? she asked, with a wink and a faux-sorry face despite the smoldering look in her eyes.

Felix had had it. He’d fallen for it—again. He’d been pulled away from Shari for the second time that night. And just when he’d finally pulled himself away from friends and family he hadn’t seen for a while. A lot of those conversations had been about how sorry everyone was about Victoria, so maybe it was better that Shari hadn’t been by his side for that. A few too many of those he’d spoken to had also lost loved ones.

“Wait, I know why it doesn’t go to your head,” Sofia said, leaning against the gray stone railing of the patio. “Because you’ve never been interested in dating the past three years, so you don’t care that women are literally lying to get you alone.”

“Well, I do care about that—it bothers the hell out of me. Why would anyone think I’d find that a positive trait?”

“Boone’s single brothers Shep and Dale get the same,” she said, her rock of an engagement ring, as their sister Camilla had called it, shining on her left hand. Boone Dalton, Sofia’s fiancé, came from a wealthy ranching family relatively new to Bronco Heights. Shep and Boone were the remaining single siblings out of five. “Though not ruses about stray limping animals. They get everything from sudden interest in the care of cattle to horseback riding lessons at the Dalton Grange. But I think they like it.”

“Why are people so focused on other people’s love lives?” he asked. “If I wanted to date, I’d be dating, you know?”

“Love is the one thing that brings the world together. People like it. They want it for themselves and for others.
